Tripoli, 1 October 2014:
Tebus and Tuaregs in Obari have agreed to form a joint security force to ensure . . .[restrict]law and order in the south western oasis town. Agreement on the 150-strong force followed mediation by the local Council of Elders and Wise Men. According to the Council’s president, Ahmed Mako, the force will be supervised by a 15-member committee.
Fighting between Tebus and Tuaregs broke out two weeks ago after a group of Tuaregs, alleged to be from outside the area and supporting Libya Dawn, tried to take over Obari’s main petrol station which was being protected at the time by a local Tebu force.
The Tuareg group was forced to withdraw but not before local Tuaregs were drawn into the conflict despite a non-agression pact between the two communities dating back more than a century. [/restrict]
