Kikhia was assassinated by the Qaddafi regime in 1996 after he was kidnapped in the Egyptian capital, Cairo on 10 December 1993.

His remains were found on 24 November 2012 in a private villa in Tripoli based on information received from Abdallah Sanussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief. The remains were confirmed as being his after a sample from the corpse was sent for analysis at a laboratory in Sarajevo.
