Tunis, 11 August 2014:

Air Malta announced today that it is adding a third weekly Malta-Djerba flight, effective 16 September.

This . . .[restrict]addition comes just a month after the airline first initiated the Djerba route, having not flown a Tunisian route prior to that.  Air Malta added the route after Tripoli International Airport was attacked in July.  Djerba is one of the nearest Tunisian airports to the Libyan border.

Air Malta representative Stephen Gauci told the Libya Herald that most of the passengers currently flying from Djerba were almost certainly Libyan nationals.  He said that the airline would maintain the route as long as there was sufficient demand.

When asked if the airline has any plans to begin flights to Libya direct, Gauci responded, that it was continuously monitoring the situation in Tripoli.  “The airline does not rule out operating to Mitiga and Misrata in the future, subject to security, safety, operational feasibility and insurance clearances.”

Air Malta does not currently provide land transport service between Djerba and Tripoli.  Passengers wishing to continue on to Libya after reaching Djerba must make their own arrangements.  Tunisian taxis, which are permitted to enter Libya at the Ras Jadir border crossing, are more than happy to make the trip for the right price.

The updated flight schedule is as follows:

Tuesday

KM680 Dep Malta 07:00hrs Arr Djerba 07:00hrs
KM681 Dep Djerba 08:00hrs Arr Malta 10:00hrs

Thursday

KM680 Dep Malta 14:55hrs Arr Djerba 14:55hrs
KM681 Dep Djerba 15:55hrs Arr Malta 17:55hrs

Sunday

KM680 Dep Malta 15:55hrs Arr Djerba 15:55hrs
