Flames engulf Misrata’s main hypermarket

Misrata, 5 February 2013:

A massive fire has destroyed Misrata’s largest hypermarket. The blaze at the Al Kardabia market broke out shortly after night-time security left at 6.45 am this morning, Tuesday. No one was injured in the conflagration, but the building was left a smoldering wreck.

Arson or an attack has been ruled out. Eyewitnesses who inspected the site said there were no signs of the building having been shelled or bombed and that the fire started inside the building.

According to initial reports, an electric short circuit may have caused the blaze. It is thought that the rapid spread of the flames scale and the lack of the firefighting equipment prevented the early control of the fire.

The market was one of the most used by Misrata residents. It was also one of the most important shopping centres in the city during the revolution. Despite the seige, it managed to supply customers with plenty of food and at low prices
