Alcohol poisoning grows: 10 deaths and 430 victims reported
Tripoli, 11 March 2103:
Ten people have now died and over 430 people are now reported to have been poisoned by drinking contaminated alcohol. It is Libya’s biggest alcohol-poisoning case ever. Over 70 people have been taken to hospital today, Monday.
The alcohol, locally known as bokha, was allegedly manufactured and sold by a man in Gargaresh’s Al-Hindi area. The police have not yet found him.
The Ministry of Health sent a letter to all hospitals yesterday saying that new victims were still arriving for treatment and that hospitals and doctors throughout the country should be on emergency standby.
It is feared that more may die. Some are in very poor condition and there are reports to that they may be transferred for treatment in Tunisia today.
Women are among the victims, as are a number of members of the SSC.
