Tripoli, 7 December:

The British Council Libya has announced that in January it will run a course for the internationally-recognised Cambridge ESOL Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).

The 120-hour CELTA course gives instruction in the principles of effective English teaching to speakers of other languages. Working with a range of resources and methods, it also develops practical teaching skills and includes six hours of assessed teaching practice.

The intensive four-week course will be run at the British Council in Tripoli and the cost is LD 3,100, which includes materials and course fees.

Applicants should be over 20 and be proficient in English, preferably having a native speaker or near-native speaker ability. The British Council has said that the intensive and high-level nature of the course means it is unsuitable for those with a lower level of English. Previous teaching experience is an advantage but not essential.

The British Council Libya is the only organisation in the country currently offering the CELTA course and this is the first CELTA it has run since the revolution. It will start on 13 January, ending on 10 February, and the initial closing date for applications is 13 December.
