Tripoli, 23 April 2013:
Despite claims that a motion would be brought to the General National Congress today to sack Chief of . . .[restrict]Staff Major General Yousef Mangoush, no motion was tabled.
Yesterday, a number of senior members of Congress told the Libya Herald that such a move would not succeed.
It has also been reported that Defence Minister Mohamed Barghati has said that he has no intention of sacking Mangoush.
On Sunday, several hundred army officers met in Brega demanding Mangoush’s dismissal and giving the government ten days in which to comply. If it did not, they said, they would leave the army. They claim that he is incompetent and corrupt.
Their threat is not seen as real. Demands that Mangoudh be sacked have been circulating for months. [/restrict]
