Residents in the north-west of the country were woken this morning by a series of tremors, as an . . .[restrict]earthquake hit just off the coast of Sabratha.
Residents in the town say there was no damage and no injuries as a result of the tremors at 6.40 am.
“It lasted for about six to seven seconds, and the buildings shook” said Sabratha resident Salah Greinidah.
The tremors were felt in Sorman and Zawia and shook buildings across the capital.
The earthquake was classed as moderate, with a recorded magnitude of 4.7 and a depth of 14 kilometres.
The area is in a seismic zone. Roman Sabratha was seriously damaged by a series of earthquakes in the 4th century, notably the devastating great earthquake of 365.
