Masked men yesterday robbed the Sirte branch of the North Africa Bank at gunpoint, making off . . .[restrict]with LD 411,000 in cash.
The three armed men stormed into the bank when it opened at 9 am. They attacked a guard and threatened the bank manager before absconding with the cash, according to Libyan news agency LANA.
No damage to property or injuries to staff were reported.
“This armed robbery happened in broad daylight, and on the first day of Ramadan,” commander of the Military zone of Sirte, Salah Abu Haligha, told the Libya Herald.
He pointed out that this was the second bank robbery in the town in just over a week. On 2 July, the Jumhouria Bank was robbed at gunpoint and LD 94,000 was snatched.
“These bank robberies have become commonplace these days,” Halihga said.
The incident is now under investigation by the Sirte police where there are strong suspicions that the two robberies could be connected. [/restrict]
