After tying up a bank guard and using an acetylene equipment to . . .[restrict]cut their way into a Bani Walid bank and one of its safes, bank robbers escaped with just LD 3,000 at the weekend.
A gang thought to number five men attacked the policeman on guard at the local branch of the National Commercial Bank. They then used the metal-cutting torch to remove a security grill and a window. Once inside the building they cut open the main safe, in which they found the relatively small sum.
Emheled Bourawi, NCB’s head of operations who arrived at the bank today to inspect the damage, told the Libya Herald that it was thought that the thieves abandoned their cutting equipment in frustration at their meagre haul. “Thank God there was no big damage at the bank” he said. The police guard was unharmed.
However the branch was closed today and the 16 staff joined colleagues from the Gumhuriya Bank branch in the town, to protest to the Bani Walid military commander and local council chairman, demanding bank branches be given better protection outside of working hours.
