Tripoli and Benghazi, 31 August 2013:
A special forces colonel is fighting for his life tonight in intensive care in Benghazi Medical Centre after an explosion under his vehicle in a busy shopping district.
Col Alaa Al-Fitouri had been parked in the Salmani district. He was just driving off with his wife, when a booby trap exploded beneath the driver’s side of his red Mazda.
Fitouri was rushed to hospital where, according to Abdullah Assaidi, spokesman for the Benghazi Joint Control Room, surgeons were forced to amputate his left leg. The officer remains in a critical condition with other serious injuries. His wife was only slightly hurt in the blast.
