Benghazi, 15 October 2013:

The bloodletting in Benghazi has not stopped, even for the Eid.

Two army soldiers . . .[restrict]were murdered in the east of the city early this morning in an attack, reportedly by militants. According to Benghazi Joint Operations Room spokesman Abdullah Zeidi, the two had their throats slit while they were sleeping at the battalion’s base at Ras Al-Mingar. Naming them as Abdelfattah Al-Amari and Tariq Alaguri, he said they were members of the Mushaa Infantry Brigade. The others were wounded in the attack but survived, Zeidi added.

In a separate incident slightly later, a parcel bomb exploded at a flower stall next to the private Marwa Hospital shattering all the glass frontage of the building. Remarkably no one was hurt, almost certainly because it is Eid and few people were around. Normally there area would have been crowded.

To add to the city’s tribulations, fire swept through a carpet warehouse in the city’s Suq Al-Masri sending a cloud of black smoke up into the sky. The fire started early this afternoon but firefighters were still tackling it this evening. It is not yet known if arson was involved or there had been a short circuit.

In March last year, there was a fire in the same market in which one man died. It was initially suggested that it was the result of a short circuit but was later said to be arson. [/restrict]
