Tripoli University closes for three days of mourning for slain students

Tripoli, 16 November 2013:

The University of Tripoli is to close for three days following the deaths of eight students . . .[restrict]who were shot yesterday in the bloody demonstrations in Gharghour, Tripoli.  The eight included two female students, Mohamed Kemishi, President of Engineering Faculty Students Union told the Libya Herald.

The eight have been named as: Abdul Ati Zendah, Luay Al-Harathi, Mahmoud Waddan, Abdulrahman Kayim, Abdulaziz Bin Musa, Akram Al-Sharef, Aisha Sadiq and Marwa Amer.

Zendah  and Harathi, were studying to be doctors, Waddan was studying economics, Kayim medical technology, Bin Musa agriculture, Al-Sharef science, Sadiq law and Amer languages.

The overall death toll is in the Gharghour massacre is now put at 42 with around some 400 injured.

In a statement released last night on its Facebook page, the university Students Union said it were in a state of civil disobedience and that the university would be closed today, calling on students and teaching staff alike not to go there until security inside has been restored.

“There will be a march towards Martyrs’ Square after Asr prayers today, then a funeral procession will head towards Shat Al-Henshir cemetery,” Kemishi explained.

A meeting is planned for tomorrow at the university to decide the next steps, he added. [/restrict]
