Homes across Tripoli will continue to face rolling power cuts until the fighting in Warshefana . . .[restrict]has ended and security in the area stabilised, the General Electric Company of Libya (GECOL) said today.
Main transmission lines and pylons in Zahra and Mamoura were damaged during recent fighting and engineers have been unable to safely work on the area, GECOL spokesman Lufti Ghuma told the Libya Herald.
“West Tripoli station was also damaged, but we have carried out maintenance work this week and it is now running normally,” he said. The problem now, Ghuma said, were the transmission lines and pylons that had been cut in Zahra and Mamoura. “We can’t fix this until the security situation stabilises,” he said
GECOL would continue to share limited electricity supplies across the capital with rolling power cuts of five to six hours per area, he said.
However, residents in some areas have reported much longer outages, with up to nine hours of cuts experienced in Janzour.
The electricity shortages are also having a knock-on effect on internet services with many homes and offices left without internet, even when there is electricity. [/restrict]
