A statement released by Benghazi’s 17 February Brigade denying involvement in the kidnapping . . .[restrict]of the son of Saiqa Special Forces Commander Wanis Bukhamada has been dismissed by some military sources as not credible.
According to Libyan News Agency LANA, the brigade, part of Libya Shield No.1, denied any involvement in Thursday’s kidnapping of Ali Wanis Bukhamada outside Benghazi University. In a statement the brigade said accusations, rife on the streets of Benghazi, that it was behind the incident, were untrue.
Saiqa sources say some of the force’s enemies have serious concerns about retribution in the form of joint attack by Saiqa and the Air Force, which could have prompted the release of the statement.
The kidnapping resulted in fighting with Saiqa outside the Brigade’s headquarters, located near Benghazi University. The 17 February Brigade said it recognised that Bukhamada had not authorised this attack, which it described as “unprovoked”, but has demanded an investigation into the incident. [/restrict]
