Libya is preparing for next month’s Friends of Libya Conference in Rome designed to provide . . .[restrict]support on security, justice and rule of law in the country. The conference, a follow-up to one a year ago in Paris, comes against a background of continuing insecurity, particularly in the south, with the international community saying it fears Libya could become a base for terrorism.
Last year, as well as Libya, attendees included Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Malta, Qatar, Spain, Turkey, UAE, UK, USA, the African Union, the Arab Maghreb Union, EU, Gulf Cooperation Council, the League of Arab States and the UN.
According to the Foreign Ministry, a committee has been formed with the Interior, Justice, Defence Ministries and the General Chief of Staff to work on Libya’s involvement in the confrerence.
“The committee is working everyday to produce a final conclusion which will represent Libya properly to attend a Rome Conference on 6 March”, Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Wafaa Boughagis, told the Libya Herald.
She said that the conference will be attended by 28 countries and international organisations, and that these will including Libya’s neighbours.
The conference will discuss the help most needed that can be provided to Libya at the present time, Boughagis said. The Libyan committee would also look at international support for a comprehensive national dialogue in the country.
She added that the committee was particularly focused on training and capacity-building of security institutions in partnership with Tunisia, Algeria, Niger, Chad, Sudan and Egypt and a number of Arab countries.
