Two more Congressmen, both from the National Forces Alliance, today submitted their resignations to the General . . .[restrict]National Congress (GNC).
The resignations of Abdulfatah Naser Al-Siklani, from the Ain Zara district of Tripoli, and Abdullatif Ramadan Al-Muhalhal, who represented Tripoli, were accepted by the GNC, according to Libyan news agency LANA.
Muhalhal told Libya Al-Ahrar Channel last night that he resigned because he firmly believed that the GNC was unable to provide anything further. He cited, in particular, its inability to solve security problems, which have become one of the most pressing issues in Libya.
“Unfortunately, we have lost faith in Congress, which was supposed to get rid of all armed groups that continue to destabilise the country in general and Benghazi in particular,” Muhalhal said.
No comments by Siklani have yet been made public.
Eight GNC members have resigned since 7 February, the official date when Congress’ mandate, as set out in the Constitutional Declaration, expired. Protests against the extension of the GNC were held on 7 and 14 February in towns and cities across Libya.
On 13 February NFA Congressman from Tobruk, Tawfik Ibrayik Shuhaibi, resigned, saying he was responding the Libyan people’s demands for Congress to be dissolved. [/restrict]
