The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, has announced plans . . .[restrict]to appoint a special personal adviser on Libya.
The move is in response to concerns to about the situation in the country.
Speaking to the European Parliament on Thursday, she said that the advisor would engage specifically with the Libyan authorities and “focus again on bringing international attention and bringing international actors together to try and support the needs of the Libya people”.
The EU, she explained, needed to “deliver support to the Libyan authorities to allow them to cement their democracy and create the functioning state”.
The new post will not detract from that of the EU ambassador based in Tripoli.
The adviser is expected to be appointed “relatively soon” according to Ashton’s spokesman, Michael Mann. He or she will be based in Brussels but will visit Libya regularly. [/restrict]
