A second batch of Libya soldiers were due to arrive in Italy today as . . .[restrict]part of a programe that will see 2,000 Libyan recruits trained by the Italian army by the end of the year.

According to the Italian daily Il Punto this second contingent of troops will undergo ten weeks of basic training at the Bersaglieri 8th Regiment’s headquarters in Persano. When training is complete the personnel will be operating at a company level.

The first group of 340 troops has just finished and returned to Libya yesterday. They had been training in Cassino with the Italian 80th Volunteer Regiment since November where they acquired basic training as a platoon of light infantry. The programme concluded with a series of live-fire exercises.

“If Libya returns to stability, it will certainly be with your support, ” he added, thanking the Italians for their hospitality.
