Tripoli, 22 May 2014:
Retired general Khalifa Hafter, leader of Operation Dignity, said on Wednesday that the country’s senior . . .[restrict]judges should form a crisis government to oversee fresh legislative elections.
Speaking at a televised press conference Hafter, who was introduced as the “Head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces” (SCAF), said a judicial council should take charge of the country, run the day-to-day business of government and supervise the transition of power to the House of Representatives. He added that with the help of SCAF, senior judges would protect the people of Libya and its resources.
The announcement came following heavy fighting in Tripoli in the early hours of Wednesday morning and the refusal of the Constitutional Assembly to become Libya’s interim legislature, the Libyan News Agency LANA reported.
Following Sundays attacks on the GNC, the “Leaders of the Libyan Army” who have tenuous links to Hafter, said that the Assembly should take over the work of Congress. [/restrict]
