Municipal elections tomorrow in Misrata, Sabratha and south

Tripoli, 23 May 2014:

Voting will take place tomorrow in Misrata, Sabratha and . . .[restrict]Sorman as well as Murzuk, Qatrun and Shargiya for their new municipal councils.

The Misrata contest is for nine seats, including a seat each reserved for a female councillor and for a revolution-wounded councillor.  All the others are for the usual seven seats.

The elections in the three southern towns of Murzuk, Sharqiya, Qatrun are taking place following earlier postponements, in the case of Qatrun twice.

Delayed elections were also to have taken place in Kufra today, but they are again postponed because of civil unrest.

They have also been postponed In Zawia South, in this case because of local demands that there be a single municipality for the town. At present, because of its size, it is split into five municipalities. Elections for Zawia West took place on 26 April.

The Central Council for Municipal Council Elections (CCMCE) yesterday announced preliminary results for the elections that took place last Saturday in Central Tripoli, Hay Andalous and Abu Sleem which, according to CCMCE chairman Otman Gajiji, were exemplary: “They went exactly according to plan and there were no security breeches.”

Following the announcement of the Tripoli initial results, the head of outgoing Tripoli Local Council, Sadat Elbadri, went on TV to announce his resignation.

Final results have also been announced for the elections held in Benghazi on 19 April.

They are:

General List (61 candidates)

  • Awad Al-Kuwairi (12,120 votes)
  • Mamhoud Al-Kikhiya (5,510)
  • Abdussalam Al-Basaiouni (1,357)
  • Tarik Al-Urafi (961)
  • Essam Al-Ghadiani (939)
  • Omar Al-Barasi (936)

Women’s List  (10 candidates)

  • Najia Bala (9,552)

Wounded Revolutionary (3 candidates)

  • Anis Al-Majbari  (14,598)

According to Gajiji, the new Benghazi councillors will be sworn in by the acting Minister of Local Government at an event in the city probably in a fortnight’s time, providing security is fine. A new mayor for Benghazi will be elected at the same time.

Swearing-in sessions for other nearby Cyrenaica municipalities will also take place on the same occasion. [/restrict]
