The inaugural session of House of Representatives in Tobruk today was greeted with strong message of . . .[restrict]support from leading EU countries and the US.
In a joint statement, the French, Italian, German, UK and US governments called on the new parliament to be inclusive and fully representative in its work. It was an important step towards putting Libya’s democratic transition back on track and helping to restore law and order in the country.
The five governments said: “We commend the determination of the Libyan people to ensure that democratic governance and rule of law form the bedrock of their country’s future, as reflected in the recent successful holding of parliamentary elections”.
They went on to urge the Constitutional Drafting Assembly to press on with its task of drafting a document that would enshrine and protect the rights of all Libyans.
They said that the international community was standing firmly behind Libya and its democracy and would stay the course until the hopes and aspirations of the people were achieved.
“To this end, we strongly condemn the ongoing violence across the country, including in Tripoli and Benghazi, which jeopardises the continuation of a peaceful transition and severely affects the life of the Libyan people”.
They called for an immediate ceasefire and the start of a peaceful dialogue, supported by the UN. All parties, they said, should recognise the authority of the newly-elected parliament.
