By Libya Herald staff.

Tripoli, 4 August 2014:

They are being called brave, courageous, honorable, heroes, patriots who did not shy away from . . .[restrict]their duty.

These are just some of the statements being made by the Libyan government about the firefighters who have risked their lives and their health battling the fires raging at the Brega oil depot on the capital’s Airport Road.

Social media, including the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Oil and Gas sites, is full of tributes to the firefighters who braved not only the massive conflagration but also the bullets and rockets flying around them as militias continued to battle one another nearby.

In spite of injuries and fatigue, according to the government, the firefighters did not quit. Tributes for them are flooding the websites, proclaiming that these brave men, some of whom are young, deserve honour and the nation’s thanks and appreciation.

So far, sadly, the fires are still blazing. It is reported that of the tanks at the depot, eight have been hit by missiles,  six fuel tanks and two diesel tanks, allegedly from Misratan-led forces.  Two gas tanks and two tanks which are not being used have not been damaged.   The firefighters are said to have brought the blaze under control in three of the tanks but these were then hit by fresh missile attacks.
