Tripoli, 6 August 2014:

The Chinese have been leaving Libya by the hundreds over the past two weeks because . . .[restrict]of the violence, and now the Filipinos and Pakistanis are following suit.

According to China’s Ambassador to Libya Li Zhiguo, some 878 Chinese nationals have evacuated Libya since 13 July, 75 percent of the 1,200 workers in the country.

Some of the Chinese workers have evacuated overland via  Ras Jedir Tunisia border crossing, while others have exited the country on boats traveling to Greece and France. Zhiguo said that around 264 workers in the steel manufacturing industry would fly out of the Misrata airport in the coming days.

However, dozens of workers, particularly those employed by Huawei Techonlogies, have opted to stay. The Chinese Embassy has prepared a contingency plan for them, Zhiguo added.

For those who evacuate to Tunisia, the Chinese Embassy has set up a working group on Djerba to provide assistance.

Many Filipino citizens are also taking seriously  their government’s advice to quit Libya, placing a severe strain on Libya’s health sector. It was reported that the Foreign Ministry of the Philippines has recalled 13,000 of its citizens, which includes about 3,000 hospital workers.

The Pakistan Foreign Office announced on Monday that it would assist its nearly 6,000 citizens in obtaining Tunisian visas, making it possible for them to evacuate by land to Tunisia where they could board flights back to Pakistan. [/restrict]
