Tripoli, 11 August 2014:

The CBL have confirmed the open secret that its Governor has been seeking sanctuary in Malta for months.

The well known secret was confirmed during yesterday’s House of Representatives (HoR) questioning of the Deputy Finance Minister Maraja Ghait who had said that the CBL Governor runs the bank from Malta.

The CBL statement confirming the fact said that the Governor’s sanctuary in Malta was a precautionary temporary measure forced upon the bank as a result of serious direct threats against the Governor.

These threats, it said, were in an effort to force the CBL to change its policy on some corruption files across most sectors.

The threats were also as a result of the stand taken by the Governor on the squandering waste of public money that has brought the country to financial disaster as a result of erroneous financial policies.

The CBL also took the opportunity in its statement to repeat its regular mantra that it stands at an equal distance from the contending political factions in Libya and that it is committed to the rule of law and regulations governing its operation and procedures in order to preserve public money and the unity of Libya, the statement said.
