Tripoli, 29 August 2014:

Grand Mufti Sadik Al-Ghariani has advised  the leaders of Libya Dawn to use a firm hand to consolidate the victory . . .[restrict]that they gained on the battlefield.

Ghariani recommended that the leaders of Libya Dawn govern with a firm hand, saying it was better to start with a heavy hand, because this led to better results in the end. It is easier, he said, to loosen the grip later than it is to start loose and tighten the grip later.

He warned in his statement that there are “those who are enemies of this victory, outlaws who would attempt to spoil the victory”. He also blasted those in the media who use their “deviant pens to spread rumours.”

He called on the leaders of Libya Dawn to “issue repeated and ongoing statements via the media” vowing “iron-fisted”  punishment for anyone who is proved to have destroyed private property, looted, robbed or terrorised people.  In this apparent reference to the plundering and torching of  some 300 homes of  opponents by victorious Dawn fighters, Ghariani said that such unjust acts tarnished the image of the revolutionaries’ victories and should be investigated quickly.

The Grand Mufti also appealed to public sector workers, citing in particular, immigration and customs officials, electricity workers and those who work in health and hygiene, to return to their jobs without delay.

Ghariani made his statement from London, where he has been living for several months. [/restrict]
