Tuareg leaders have rejected an appeal from Misrata that they support the Libya Dawn Operation in Tripoli.
A . . .[restrict]delegation from Misrata, led by Misrata Shura Council member Mohammed Al-Ragoubi, arrived unexpectedly in Obari on Monday hoping to persuade the Tuareg to back the operation.
Announcing that the delegation had come to discuss the current situation in the country, Ragoubi assured those present at the hastily convened meeting that the Tuaregs played an integral role in Libya and that the tribe’s support of and involvement with Libya Dawn would be a great asset to the movement.
The delegation called on the Tuareg elders to support Omar Al-Hassi’s “government” and to get behind the resurrected General National Congress (GNC). The group also asked the tribe for assistance in securing the Obari oilfields – thought to be the real reason from the Misratan visit.
Libya Dawn forces indicated last month that they wanted to “secure” Libya oilfields. The Tuareg are key to controlling the fields in the Murzuq and Ghadames basins. Without them, there is little chance of Dawn forces being able to secure anything in the area.
In response to the approach, the Tuareg elders said that they were behind “Mother Libya” and that they would have no part in supporting one Libyan faction against another. They wanted to see productive dialogue that would lead to a peaceful solution between the warring parties, they added. [/restrict]
