Tripoli, 13 October 2014:

In response to the fighting in both the Warshefana district and the Jebel Nafusa which have . . .[restrict]left at least dozens of civilians dead and injured and over 100,000 displaced, various national organisations have responded by mobilising volunteers to provide humanitarian assistance.

The Libyan Red Crescent has sent a relief team from Tripoli to Bani Walid to distribute of food, blankets, mattresses and other humanitarian aid for those who fled from the Warshefana area last week.

The Libyan Council of Elders has also announced that it has appointed a “reconciliation council” whose members would respond specifically to issues of injustice. According to the council head, Mohamed Al-Basher, the group would meet within the next few days.

Following the surprise moves on Kikla and Qalaa by Zintani forces, former General National Congress (GNC) members Abdelaziz Ehraiba (Kikla) and Ramadan Enbaia (Gharian) also went to the town to assess the situation of those wounded and displaced by the fighting.

Pointing out that the attacks directly followed the visit of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to Tripoli, during which he urged an immediate ceasefire and made a strong call for a national comprehensive dialogue, Ehraiba called on the United Nations to assume full responsibility for the “brutal attack” on civilians.

For his part, Enbaia condemned the attack, stating that the Gharian would be “ready to receive and accommodate” those displaced from their homes elsewhere. [/restrict]
