An airstrike targeting a customs depot and storage area near the Libya-Tunisia border crossing at Ras . . .[restrict]Jadir has left one man dead and a least three injured.
The dead man was a member of the security forces stationed at the border, according to the Tripoli-based Libyan news LANA. A source at Ras Jedir said he was from Al-Jamail, adding that the three injured were not thought to be in a critical condition.
He explained that the bomb did not hit the border crossing itself, but a customs storage area and depot nearby the section of the crossing used only by trucks. This was where customs officials carried out checks and searches on all trucks bringing imports into Libya from Tunisia, he said.
LANA reported that the customs depot was “just metres” away from the crossing used by passenger vehicles and pedestrians, causing chaos and confusion amongst waiting travellers.
Ras Jedir is an extremely busy crossing point for trucks, many of which bring essential food supplies to Libya.
The airstrike at Ras Jedir was the latest in a string of bombings carried out by the Libyan National Army targeting sites in Western Libya. These followed an announcement from the internationally-recognised government, which is now based in the east of the country, that it was preparing to retake Tripoli. [/restrict]
