UNSMIL has demanded an end to the . . .[restrict]heavy fighting in Warshefana while within the region, Libyan National Army units appear to be tightening their grip on Aziziya and pressing toward the southern suburbs of Tripoli.
However resistance in Aziziya may not be at an end. This evening the army declared a curfew in the town, which today was hit by a number of shells from Libya Dawn militias.
An army source told the Libya Herald that the fighting today had not been as intense as of recent. The main centre of conflict appears to have been at Zahra Bridge, ten kilometres from the southern Tripoli suburb of Swani Ben Adam.
Meanwhile, talks among elders led to an exchange of prisoners and bodies between Warshefana and Janzour. An unknown number of captives was swapped at Alasaba. The Warshefanans also handed over the body of slain Janzour leader Lameen Gnaidi.
It is the continuing links between the community elders of either side that UNSMIL was clearly singling out for praise when it commended those who were seeking a ceasefire.
UNSMIL said today that towns in the Warshefan region has suffered considerable damage in the latest fighting. It was also gravely concerned by the hardship faced by locals “many of whom have been displaced, abducted and tortured, and they are in dire need of humanitarian aid”.
It went on to repeat the warning that targeting civilians could amount to crimes punishable under international humanitarian law. [/restrict]
