Tripoli, 12 April 2015:
Confusion surrounds the terrorist attack outside the South Korean embassy in Tripoli early this morning in . . .[restrict]which two people are said to have been killed.
According to the foreign ministry in Seoul, two policemen were killed and another seriously injured in a drive-by attack on building in a small side street in the capital’s Gargaresh district at around 1.20 am. Some 40 machine gun shots were fired, the ministry said, adding that the group may have links to the Islamic State (IS).
Tripoli’s security spokesman Essam Naas is also reported saying that two Libyans were killed and a third wounded.
IS has claimed responsibility, but that is no guarantee of it being true. IS has claimed most attacks in Tripoli recently but in none of the cases has this been confirmed.
The head of the diplomatic police, Colonel Mabruk Buzhair, however, has said that one policeman had been killed, named as Fawzi Jumaa, with another guard injured. The second death was that of a civilian, named as Ahmed Jibril.
This has given risen to rumours that the civilian was Jamal Jibril, the brother of Mahmoud Jibril, the leader of the National Forces Alliance and prime minister in the immediate aftermath of the revolution. Jamal is said to have been visiting a relative who lives in the street. However, the rumours have not been confirmed by the family.
The government in Beida this evening condemned the embassy attack which it blamed on “outlaws”. It sent its condolences to the families of the two victims. [/restrict]
