Sixty members of the continuing General National Congress (GNC) have called on its president, Nuri . . .[restrict]Abu Sahmain, to suspend participation on the UN-brokered Dialogue, the Libya Herald has been told. They are also said to have demanded that there be no more involvement until Leon and other UNSMIL officials be replaced.
According to Congress member for Sebha, Abdulgader Ehwaili who is member of its Political Affairs Committee, the recent draft proposals from UN Special Envoy Bernardino Leon, are wholly unacceptable. He is reported saying that the GNC may vote tomorrow to suspend participation in the dialogue.
The latest draft, released at the end of last month, gives very little to the GNC. The House of Representatives is recognised as Libya’s legitimate parliament and although some members of Congress would be co-opted as members of a Supreme State Council, it would have an advisory role only.
This has infuriated the GNC which continues to see itself as the only legitimate legislature in the country. It had imagined that it would be given a prominent role in the Dialogue proposals.
Nine days ago, when participants to the Dialogue were called to Tunis to meet with EU Foreign Policy Chief, Federica Mogherini, Congress representatives refused to go.
Libya Dawn, the military wing of Congress, has already called for Leon’s dismissal. [/restrict]
