The UN has warned that further outside humanitarian aid to Libya is in jeopardy following . . .[restrict]the abduction eight days ago of three employees of a UN-linked charity.
The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya said today that he was deeply concerned at the fate of the trio and has called for their immediate release. He described attacks on aid workers as war crimes.
The victims, who have not been named, were seized a week ago at Al-Shwayrif 400 kilometres south of Tripoli, while on their way to deliver humanitarian assistance to south-western Libya. They are employed by the Shaik Tahir Azzawy Charity which works with a range of international NGOs and other charities. Nothing has been heard of them since their abduction.
The Coordinator said that he was worried about the impact of this incident on the ability of the international community and its Libyan partners to distribute urgently-needed aid, not least to refugees who have fled fighting elsewhere in the country.
He urged all who had any influence to get the aid workers released and also called for help with the distribution of aid.
