Tripoli, 30 June:

The barracks of the National Army in Benghazi were reportedly attacked by an RPG at around 22:30 this evening, . . .[restrict]Saturday.

It is understood that the blast destroyed part of the compound’s rear wall, but there were no casualties.

It is not yet known who was responsible for the attack, which comes as at a time of heightened tensions in the eastern city.

With just a week to go until Libya’s first nationwide elections in almost 50 years, frustration amongst the region’s federalists has been growing over what they perceive as the unjust distribution of seats for the National Conference and a sense that the authorities in Tripoli have been ignoring their concerns.

On 20 June, the road between eastern and western Libya was blocked to military and much commercial traffic by forces belonging to the pro-federalist Cyrenaica Transitional Council (CTC).

Benghazi has also been hit by a number of attacks on foreign missions in recent months, believed to be the work of Islamist militants. [/restrict]
