Tripoli, 6 February 2013:

Libyans now have the chance to learn English via mini-lessons sent in text messages to their mobile phones, thanks to a new scheme launched by the British Council.

For a monthly cost of LD 3, students will receive five SMS text messages a week, each containing a short English lesson.

“Typical lessons, from the Learn English SMS Service, include short descriptions of grammar and vocabulary items, and useful phrases and common expressions,” the British Council told the Libya Herald. “Subscribers also learn interesting facts about the English language and tips on how to study better.”

With three levels – elementary, intermediate and advanced – students can either learn from scratch or enhance their existing knowledge of the English language.

Feedback from other countries where the service is available has apparently been very positive. “People like receiving a little piece of English language learning on a regular basis,” said Ben Gray, the British Council’s ELT Manager in Libya.

In May last year ‘Learn English Radio’ started being broadcast across the country, following an agreement between the British Council and Libyan National Radio. [/restrict]
