Tripoli, 28 March 2013:

Libya’s first Monoprix store opened its . . .[restrict]doors in Tripoli’s Sabaa district today, Thursday.  It is the first of what will be 52 stores throughout the country that are expected to create 4,000 direct jobs and another 4,000 indirect ones.

The franchise on the Tunis-based chain, independent of the French outlets of the same name but linked to it, has been brought to Libya by HBG, owned by Libyan businessman Husni Bey.

With the opening today of the new store, the plan is to open another every month for the next six months, Bey told the Libya Herald.  Thereafter, there will be two opening every month.

The Sabaa store covers 5,000 square metres, of which 3,000 square metres is the shopping area, selling food and consumer products.  It employs 70 people.

The second store will open next month in Ain Zara. The first in Benghazi will open in June, Bey said.

Monoprix has 65 stores in Tunisia where it is owned by SNMVT (Société Nouvelle Maison de la Ville de Tunis). Although separate from the French chain, it distributes its products.  The Tunisian company has a management contract with HBG.. [/restrict]
