By Farah Waleed.

Tripoli, 20 April 2013:

One police officer was killed and another seriously wounded today during a raid on drug traffickers . . .[restrict]in Tripoli by the Counter Crime Agency (CCA). The dead man was a member of the CCA, as is the wounded officer.

The later, according to a source at the CCA, was transferred to hospital in a critical condition.

The incident took place at dawn today in the Sports City district in west Tripoli, an area that has a reputation for drug dealing and, according to the source, where there have been armed clashes with dealing in the past.

Despite the killing, the CCA unit was able to arrest the those believed to be responsible after laying siege to the premises.

Security forces have recently launched a major campaign against drugs dealers and manufacturers and suppliers of alcohol.

Last month, Tripoli experienced a humanitarian disaster when over 100 people died and nearly a thousand others became ill after drinking contaminated home-made alcohol. [/restrict]
