Tripoli, 25 May 2013:

A bridge in Tripoli was seriously damaged overnight when it was apparently hit by a generator . . .[restrict]loaded onto a truck.  Today two cranes were on-site, one of which was being used to support the structure.

Reports of what happened to the footbridge, on the Airport Road near the Gharghour exit, are varied and contradictory. There were early claims on social media sites that the bridge had collapsed completely.  There is however general agreement that the structure was hit by the top of a generator being transported on the back of a truck. The vehicle and its load had been moved by early this morning.

There were however considerable delays to traffic as engineers and workers moved around, seeking to shore up the bridge and make it safe. [/restrict]
