Benghazi, 26 October 2013:
There was an attempt yesterday to kill the deputy head of Crime Prevention in Benghazi, Abdussalam Barghathi. His . . .[restrict]brother, Sulaiman, who was travelling with him at the time, was wounded.
Confirming the attack, Benghazi Joint Operations Room spokesman, Abdullah Zeidi, said that Sulaiman was shot in the leg.
The two men are cousins of Colonel Ahmed Mustafa Al-Barghathi, the head of Military Police in Benghazi. His murder eight days ago sparked an anti-Islamist backlash in which the family home of Wissam Ben Hamid, commander of the Libya Shield No. 1 Battalion was torched.
In a statement yesterday, Abdussalam Bargathi said that he was not pointing a finger at anyone or any organisation for the moment and would not do so until he had solid evidence. He was certainly not accusing Wisam Bin Hamaid, whom he praised.
Following the assassination, Ahmed Barghathi, Abdessalam disclosed in an interview with the Libya Alhurra TV station that he and his cousin had both been involved in tracking down a number of Qaddafi regime figures. [/restrict]
