Tripoli, 24 November 2013:

Libya is the latest country to back Dubai’s bid to host the World Expo 2020. . . .[restrict]If the bid is successful, it will be the first time the event has been held in a Middle Eastern country.

Libya’s message of support cited the UAE’s strong role within the Arab world and praised the Emirates’ support of the Libyan people during the 2011 revolution.

“We wish Dubai and the UAE all the best, and congratulate the Dubai bid organising and promoting team on a job well done,” said the Libyan Ambassador to Dubai, Aref Ali Nayed.

The World Expo event is held every five years in a different country and attracts millions of visitors who explore pavilions, exhibitions and cultural events staged by hundreds of nations, international organisations and businesses. The six-month event could attract up to 25 million tourists according to reports in the UAE press.

Although Dubai is a favourite to hold the exposition, it faces competition from three other cities. Yekaterinburg in Russia, ?zmir in Turkey, and the Brazilian city of São Paulo are all in the running. The vote will take place on Wednesday.

The next event, World Expo 2015 – the focus of which is ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,’ will take place in Milan, Italy. [/restrict]
