Tripoli, 23 October 2014:
Two men from the Cyrenaican town of Shahat died at the hands of Islamic extremists in . . .[restrict]Derna on Wednesday, according to a source from within the military.
One of the victims has been identified as Osama Tayyib Al-Ar, while the other’s identity is still unknown.
It is believed that the two men were kidnapped as leverage in a prisoner exchange, but when negotiations failed, the men were simply killed, the source said.
According to a member of the staff at Al-Haraish Hospital in Derna, the men died from gunshot wounds and their bodies were taken back to Shahat early Thursday morning.
As Derna’s Shoura Council of Islamic Youth (SCIY) has gained power and declared allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS), the town has become a hotbed for extremism. This past week, SCIY set up an Islamic Court and handed down a sentence of public flogging for a group of young men found guilty of alcohol abuse. [/restrict]
