An Irish company is reported to be about to send 2,500 live cattle to Libya . . .[restrict]at the end of the month or the start of December.
A contract has been awarded to Irish meat trader Viastar, the Irish Independent reported today. Viastar owner James Mallon said that the consignment will be made up of Friesian and continental bulls of between 300 and 550 kilograms. It is not clear who in Libya has placed the order, nor where the animals are to be shipped. Attempts to contact Viastar today received no response.
Until the 1996 outbreak of Mad Cow disease (BSE) Ireland was a prime supplier of beef to Libya with a peak export of some 81,500 cows worth €70 million being sent to Libya in 1995. Exports did not resume until 2012.
