Tripoli, 23 November 2014:
Misrata Municipal Council has demanded that in the wake of the UN’s blacklisting Ansar Al-Sharia . . .[restrict]disband and that the UN also impose sanctions on General Khalifa Hafter.
In a statement issued today the councillors called on Ansar “ to dissolve their group or movement which hinder the political process chosen and adopted by the Libyans”. However they also said “ We are calling on Ansar Sharia in Benghazi and Derna to announce their clear commitment to the principles of 17 Feb Revolution. Those principles aim to rebuild the Libyan state on justice and rights that do not violate our Islamic Sharia”.
They also demanded “the strongest possible sanctions on the so-called General Hafter and all his supporters who help him to terrorise, kill and displace innocent people”.
The councillors said that they had studied the UN Security Council’s blacklisting of Ansar and confirmed that on principle they rejected violence, terrorism and extremism and those who supported them.
They went on to reject international and regional interference in Libya’s internal affairs.
“We continue to support efforts to turn Libya into a secure and democratic state” they said, “We also stress the important rule of the UN to rebuild the Libyan state based on institutions and peaceful power transfer”.
