Libya is to get a new university and possibly an overflow airport for Labraq, the government . . .[restrict]has decided.
Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni chaired his eighth cabinet meeting which, rather than focusing on the security position, turned its attention for a change to education and transport.
The new university is to be set up at Ajdabiya as part of a drive to boost places for Libyans to study sciences in particular. The town currently has a small college which is part of Benghazi University.
The cabinet also decided that Zintan will be re-designated the main campus of the Western Mountain University.
There was concern that Labraq airport is struggling to cope with the increased traffic that has followed the closure of, and damage to Benghazi’s Benina International.
Ministers considered structural improvements to Labraq along with work on Martuba, (south of Derna), Kufra, Ghat and Tobruk airports. Until earlier this year, some of the airports were already being upgraded. Turkish firm Renaissance was for instance working on Kufra and a major upgrade of the Benina terminal.
One way to ease pressure on Labraq would be the upgrading of the small airstrip at Jarroutha. The cabinet agreed on the work in principle, subject to the approval of the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority.
Thinni and his ministers also discussed water shortages and agreed to fund bore wells. Wells are already being sunk in Beida to meet rising demand.
