Beida, 13 April 2015:

The largely Tebu Desert Shield Brigade, under the Libyan National Army (LNA),  on Sunday captured smugglers . . .[restrict]and seized what has been described as substantial shipment of illegal drugs and alcohol at the Al-Toum border crossing with Niger.

Border guards discovered Tramadol, a highly-addictive opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. They also found Kasapreco brand Alomo Bitters, an alcoholic beverage distilled in Ghana which, according to the Kasapreco website, “is known to have aphrodisiac qualities for men and women”.

Border guard Ibrihim Youssimi, told the Libya Herald that this was not the first time such a shipment had been discovered.

“We intercept loads of drugs and alcohol on a weekly basis,” Youssimi said, “and, honestly, Libya’s illegal migration problems pale in comparison to our issues with alcohol and drug smuggling.”

The illegal goods would be destroyed, Youssimi said and the smugglers would most likely be required to pay a fine. He gave no details of those who had been detained.

“In the past, we have confiscated the vehicles of repeat offenders,” Youssimi added.
