Tripoli, 7 May 2015:
The Sicilian Parliament has awarded a medal to the Libyan ambassador to Italy, Ezzeddin Al-Awami.
In . . .[restrict]accepting the honour, the former First Deputy President of the General National Congress spoke of the strength of the relationship between Libya and Sicily, stressing the strong economic ties they have traditionally held.
Furthermore, Awami asked Sicily to stand beside the “legitimate” government of Libya and to show support for Libya’s request that the arms embargo be lifted so that the Libyan National Army can fight terrorists.
Chairman of the Municipalities of Sicily Leo Orlando affirmed that Sicily was committed to cooperation with Libya economically, politically and militarily.
Although appointed by the Beida-based Thinni government as ambassador to Italy, the Italian government has not formally accepted his credentials, although in practice, he is accepted as such. The reason is believed to be a desire not to antagonise Libya Dawn. [/restrict]
