Ghat, 28 July 2015:

There were angry demonstrations in several southern towns in Libya following the court verdicts in Tripoli . . .[restrict]sentencing Saif Al-Islam, Abdullah Senussi and seven other Qaddafi-regime figures to death.

In Sebha’s Manshiya district, members of the Qaddadfa tribe, waving green Qaddafi-era flags and firing guns into the air, blocked roads demanding the accused be set free.

In Brak and Qirah, demonstrators burned tyres to block roads in protest against the judgment, proclaiming it null and void. In Shuwairif the main Tripoli-Sebha rad was cut.

The three places are strongholds of the powerful Magarha tribe, of which Abdullah Senussi is a member.

There are fears that the tribe may try to again cut off water supplies to the coast in protest at the verdict. Two years ago, following the kidnapping of Senussi’s daughter Anoud, members of the tribe stormed the main pumping station of the Man-Made River (MMR) at Jebel-Hasana and forced employees to stop pumping until she was released.

There have also been protests in Bani Walid and, reportedly, even in IS-controlled Sirte. [/restrict]
