The Beida-based Ministry of Local Government has give the seven municipal councillors in the southern . . .[restrict]oasis town of Murzuk until next Wednesday to decide who should be mayor.
Although municipal elections took place in June last year, the councillors have been unable to agree on someone for the post. The town, some 150 kilomtres south west of Sebha has a population of just under 13,000, many of them Tebu. However, according to an official with the Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections (CCMCE) only three Tebu councillors were elected. Under the rules, a mayor needs four votes to be elected. The Tebus cannot gather an extra vote and the other four cannot agree on anyone else.
As a result, the CCMCE official claimed, the political atmosphere in the town has soured amid threats and resentment, and municipal government has failed to emerge.
