Tripoli, 11 August 2015:

Sherif Al-Wafi, one of the independent members in the UN-brokered Dialogue negotiations when resumed today in . . .[restrict]Geneva, has told the Libya Herald that he decided not to attend because of inadequate communication by UNSMIL.

He says that members had not been informed of the reason for change of venue, neither had the Libyan nor the Moroccan authorities. He also complained that UNSMIL had not provided delegates with any agenda for the meetings. This was unacceptable, he said.

He also claimed that UNMSIL head Bernardino Leon planned to include “Islamist” parties in the government. He said he accepted this on the basis that Libya needed compromise to save it from further disaster, but the Islamists did not deserve any role in government and that they should never be allowed to control the country again.

Although Wafi has decided not to attend,  leaders of political parties are in Geneva, including Mohamed Sawan of the Justice and Construction Party, Abdulhakim Belhaj of the Nation Party and Guma El-GAmaty of the Taghyeer Party

The current Dialogue round is supposed to choose a prime minister for the new government. Wafi claimed that, among the delegates, the leading contender for the post was now Shebani Abuhamouda, currently Libyan Ambassador in Paris.

Wafi himself was reported to be Prime Minsiter Abdullah Al-Thinni’s choice as ambassador to Cairo when last month a list was published of ambassadorial appointments and and transfers.  It had current ambassador to Egypt,Mohamed Faiz Gebril moving to Australia. [/restrict]
