After hardly a week in the job, Libya’s new acting ambassador to Egypt has been suspended . . .[restrict]while he is investigated for “financial irregularities”.
Mohamed Salah Al-Dressi was told of his suspension, ordered by the Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni, on Thursday and instructed to hand over the running of the Cairo embassy to the most senior member of staff there.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also suspended two other diplomats working in Egypt, at the consulate in Alexandria. Senior political officer Abdulkader Ali Mohamed Al-Emsalati and health attaché Nasser Abdulsalam Abdullah were both relieved of their duties while they are being investigated. It is unclear what allegations have been made against the pair. Nor is the identity of the most sensior diplomat who is now standing in for the ambassador.
Al-Dressi, who was formerly Consul general in Alexandria before going to Cairo, replaced Mohamed Fayez Jibril, dismissed last month after being in the job since May 2013. [/restrict]
